Ankie’s Garden

Ankie and Dimitris, my in-laws, have been married for 50 years. Over 30 years ago, they built a house in Galatas, Greece, where Dimitris was born and raised. They used to spend about half of the year at their beautiful house by the sea, and the other half in the Netherlands.

In recent years, Dimitris’ Alzheimer’s has brought challenges. He speaks less, and memories fade, but their bond remains strong. Their garden in Galatas, filled with cacti and vibrant plants, has become a symbol of their relationship—rooted, enduring, and transforming with time.

From 2020 to 2024, I photographed this garden extensively. To me its sharp cacti and delicate blooms reflect both their struggles and moments of beauty and closeness.

"Ankie’s Garden" transformed into a mirror that captures the essence of their connection—a love that holds on, lets go, and endures.
